(PAWS, www.pawslondon.ca) is a new non-profit organization that is assisting with the creation of a 'Non-Profit Companion Animal Shelter & Hospital' in London.  The Shelter will be dedicated to providing temporary shelter & emergency veterinary care for pets of women leaving domestic abuse situations, the homeless & patients with mental health disorders during times of crisis.  

There are very few abused women's shelters, homeless shelters or mental health care facilities in Ontario that accommodate pets on site. This being said, data from Ontario tells us that up to 48% of abused women delay leaving their abusive partner because of concern of leaving their pet behind (in 65% of these situations, a pet in the home has either been abused or killed). Homeless individuals with pets are forced to experience extreme temperatures and other dangers because they do not wish to leave their animal unattended and uncared for by entering a homeless shelter.  Many mental health care patients do not enter or leave treatment prematurely because of lack of temporary care for their pet.
